YOUTH SMALL ANIMAL PROJECT GUIDELINES

Small Animal Check In is July 21st, 8:00am to 2:00pm
Market Goats Weigh In is Sunday, July 21st, 2:30pm, T-Barn Scales
1. Exhibitors must be residents of Clare County, enrolled in a Clare County school district, or be enrolled in a Clare County organized 4-H Club or a member of the Clare County Junior Small Animal Association (CCJSAA).
2. Exhibitors in the Small Animal Project Area must follow the following age guidelines.
The age of the exhibitor as of January 1st of the current year shall be used to determine exhibitors' eligibility in all classes.
3. Animals may be raised or purchased. All animals or parent animals, including showmanship animals, must be in the exhibitor's possession as of June 1st of the current year. Market rabbit pens and fryers must be in possession by June 20, 2024. A Small Animal Fair Project Sheet must be completed (including photograph) and submitted to the Overall Small Animal Superintendent by June 1st, for each small animal to be entered into the fair.
4. All animals (rabbits, cavy & goats) must have a legible tattoo, scrappies tag, or other specie appropriate identification.
5. Animals must be in good health to be entered as exhibits. All entries are to be inspected by knowledgeable person(s) designated by the Overall Small Animal Barn Superintendent before being placed in a pen or cage at the Clare County Fair.
6. Exhibitor must provide feed and care for their own animals. For goats buckets for water, feed tub or hanging feeder for grain, hay at will (hay racks are provided). For poultry, bottle fonts or white or beige containers can be used for water containers, depending upon the size of the bird(s) and white or beige containers or black clip-on crocks for feed. For rabbits, clean rabbit bowls for feed and water or water bottles may be used. For Cavy/Pocket pets, crocks or water bottles for food and water. Superintendent /Fair board have the right to refuse the use of dirty or non-approved recycled plastic containers for food and water. It will be the exhibitor’s responsibility to have these changed out within 6 hours of notification they are not acceptable.
7. Morning feeding will be done before 9:00am and night feeding by 9:00pm.
8. It is recommended that each exhibitor provide a lock for his or her poultry, cavy, rabbit, and pocket pet cage. It shall be the duty of each exhibitor to remove the lock for the period required for judging. An extra key with a label needs to be in the key box by the stage in case of an emergency.
9. Exhibitor may exhibit in their respective sections and are limited to one entry per class.

10. Exhibitors must be present at the time of judging or make prior arrangements with the Small Animal Superintendent.
11. Animal entries may be limited due to availability of space by the overall Small Animal Barn Superintendent.
12. All small animal exhibitors selling in the Small Animal Auction must do the YQCA and have the certificate turned into the fair office by June 23,2024.
13. The Small Animal Auction is open to Clare County Junior Small Animal Association members. Members must follow the Clare County Junior Small Animal Association By-Law Auction Rules. Each member is responsible for submitting an auction sheet & a copy of the pedigree to sell a project animal at the CCJ Small Animal Auction to the CCJ Small Animal Association President by July 1st. The breed, variety, age and sex are to be listed to the best of the member's knowledge. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion may be added or deleted after judging.
14. Each club must attend four (4) CCJ Small Animal Association meetings yearly. The consequences to the club that do not attend the required four (4) meetings will not be allowed to sell at the auction. This "Year" means September of the previous year through fair week. This applies to all members that sell at the auction.
15. Only “A” placing animals may be sold. Any animal disqualified for health reasons or animals not judged cannot be sold at the auction.
16. The members at the CCJ Small Animal Auction at the fair will allot 10% of the sale price of their animal to the CCJ Small Animal Association. These funds are to be used for association events.
17. The CCJ Small Animal Association reserves the right to control all increases or decreases in sale numbers. This depends on how many members are in the project for that year. The association will decide on/by the first Sunday of the Fair on how many animals each member may sell.
18. Novice class in Showmanship is open to all first-year project exhibitors. Winners of the Novice Class will not compete for Champion or Reserve Showman.
19. It is required that all exhibitors follow the following guidelines regarding the proper attire for each species being shown. Proper attire is as follows:
Dairy Goats - White/Beige Pants and White Shirt tucked into pants.
Meat Goats/Wethers - Dark Pants and Show Shirt tucked into pants.
Poultry/Rabbits/Pocket Pets/Cavies - Dark Pants and White Shirt tucked into pants.
All Species may wear a White Long Lab Coat. No holes in pants.
The exception to this rule is exhibitors showing during the same general time in another project other than small animals will be allowed to wear the proper attire for either project.
Closed Toe shoes must be worn for all species, no flip flops allowed.
20. Goats used for showmanship classes must be: Bucks under 6 months of age at Fair Time, Does or Wethers.
21. All dairy goats must be milked out between the hours of 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm the night prior to the show. Owners have the discretion to milk the following morning to alleviate the animal's discomfort.
22. Horns: All dairy goats must be disbudded. Horns can remain on meat goats & wethers.
23. All male goats 6 months and older must be properly wethered or castrated, except trailered bucks.
24. Broiler Project is open to all youth 6 years and older that are CCJ Small Animal members.
25. Pheasant Project is open to all youth 6 years old that are CCJ Small Animal members.
OVERALL CHAMPION SMALL ANIMAL SHOWMAN CONTEST
Open to first and second place winners in Showmanship classes of Cats, Cavies, Dogs, Goats, Poultry and
Rabbits. All participants will receive a participant's ribbon.
OUTSTANDING SMALL ANIMAL MEMBER
Clare County Farm Bureau gives a cash award to the most outstanding Small Animal Member of the year. Judging will take place during fair week. Criteria for the award to be based on the care of the project animal, cleanliness of the pen, sportsmanship, cooperation and attitude of the member.
