SECTION A - DOGS
General rules for this project are as follows:
- The dog need not be of purebred stock and can be any type or size.
- All dogs must be fed, trained and otherwise cared for by the youth Exhibitor. Exhibitor must own animal and must have possession of it by May 15th.
- Project animals must be healthy and up to date on all vaccinations, including D.H.L.P.P. and rabies. Although Bordatella (Kennel Cough) vaccinations is not required, it is recommended.
- Dogs must have an attendant and be on a leash or in a crate at all times except during judging.
- Females in season will be allowed to show but at the very end of a class. They should be kept away from the rings until they are called. Please notify the Superintendent that you have a female in season so you can be scheduled at the end of the class.
- Each exhibitor may compete in one showmanship, one obedience, one agility and one promotion class.
- Two exhibitors may show the same dog if both helped care for and train the animal. Both exhibitors will receive an A, B or C award and the corresponding premium. Both exhibitors will be scored, however in the interest of fairness to other competitors, only the first run of the dog in any given class will be competitive. This means only the first exhibitor’s points from any one class will count toward class champion and overall champion. The exhibitors may decide which of them will go first.
- Members are asked to avoid correcting or training their dogs in the show ring. Any excessive roughness or correction of dogs at any time will not be tolerated.
- Appropriate leads and collars will be used in the show ring. This means a buckle collar with no tags for agility, and a buckle or choke collar and six-foot leash for obedience. A show lead is recommended for showmanship.
- Pre-Novice A obedience class is for 1st year competitive obedience members only. Pre-Novice B is for members in their 2nd competitive year or above.
- In Agility and Obedience, a dog will compete in the highest-class level in which it has received at least one qualifying score in either a 4-H match or sanctioned trial. In addition, any dog that has shown for three or more years at any one level in obedience or agility at the fair and received a champion or reserve champion award in its event with a qualifying score in any of those three years must be shown at a more advanced level. In obedience, a qualifying score is 170 or above with at least 50 percent in each exercise. If a dog is already showing at the most advanced level it may still compete at the fair.
- All obedience and agility classes will be judged on the standard 4-H scorecard. (Scorecards are available at the 4-H office).
- On the day of the show, any dog which bites, attacks, or attempts to attack another person or animal outside the show ring may be brought before the superintendent for consideration of dismissal. Any dog, which exhibits aggression while inside the show ring, may be dismissed at the judge’s discretion.
- Promotion Class: Exhibitor must submit no more than one (1) written page and/or poster promoting Dog a specified breed of dog, their own pet dog or a combination of the above three.
